Our first motorhome trip to France Hourtin to Verdon-sur-Mer
We awake on the municipal aire de camping cars at Hourtin having breakfast and a slow start to the day. The UK is still reeling from the result of the EU Referendum, I read a long piece by Simon Heffer in the Telewag, his conclusion was that electorate had punished the elite political classes who were so remote from the ordinary people. Heffer thought that Labour had “rubbed the noses of people in diversity” and Cameron’s pushing of the homosexual marriage statute as major examples of things that really alienated ‘the people’. Having thought about that I find it difficult to disagree, the EU Referendum was the people’s chance to tell politicians something more than yes or no to Europe, and the people grabbed it with both hands. However, the ruling elite is so far away and full of their own opinions that they will never see that. (extract from my journal).
It’s interesting what you find time to write about when in France . . .
We wandered around Hourtin, the local Spar shop had wine ‘on tap’ at €1.60 a litre, both rosé and red, we didn’t have a bottle handy so we not able to sample this low-cost wine. Next stop was Aldi, here at Aldi we were underwhelmed by both the selection and prices. In the UK Aldi is a great place to shop, in France we found Aldi less attractive. I did read somewhere that in France the major supermarkets had responded well to the challenges presented by Aldi and Lidl, our experience confirmed that. Even so we managed to spend €64.
From Hourtin we headed to Soulac-sur-Mer, at the ‘top’ end of the Gironde estuary, here we visited E.Leclerc supermarket. E.Leclerc was certainly up-market compared to Aldi, we bought a few things including a coffee filter cone, we had been looking for a filter cone for some time.
Found the municipal aire de camping cars in Hourtin, there are two parts to this aire, on opposite sides of the road. The electric was not working, but a man I spoke to said it would be on at the end of the month. Good facilities.
Walked on the beach after a really good day.
