Around Tåkern Lake and Naturum Tåkern
We wake by the small lake here in Sweden, the water is like a mirror, still and motionless lit by brilliant sunshine. Four greylag geese appear, swimming slowly around the edge of the lake, sending ripples across the surface of the water, they suddenly lift of the water in a couple of wingbeats, much to my surprise. I thought that such a heavy bird would take off like a swan, by running across the surface of the water.
It was a cold night, I had really bad cramp in my legs, so bad that I got up and filled myself a hot water bottle. After breakfast we decided to head north east, towards Tåkern Lake and Naturum Tåkern, a well-known bird watching area. Good roads, but by this time we were a little low on fresh water so visited a service station, but could not find a water tap to fill up. At the next service station we managed to top up with water by using a watering can, hard work in the heat of the day.
Google maps routed us badly, we ended up driving along a farm track that ran across fields then ended abruptly at a fence. Not a good start as we had to reverse back along the very narrow track, maybe we should have suspected something was wrong, but often we find nature reserves are served by very poor roads.
We eventually reached Tåkern Lake and Naturum Tåkern later afternoon and joined another motorhome on the overflow parking area. The notices there say motorhomes can stay overnight for free, but if you use any of the facilities, for example the toilets, then you have to pay the equivalent of £10.
At the nature centre we viewed the lake then had our evening meal. We decided to get up early and walk along the boardwalks before the centre opened at 10am, that would allow us to see the birds before many people arrived. By the time we settled down to sleep there were another 4 motorhomes on the car park.
