Arrival in Sweden by ferry and travel to lake overnight stop

There may have been no noise or vibration last night, but during the night on the ferry from Travemünde to Trelleborg I was awakened by a chiming noise. Gill had trouble sleeping too. The chiming turned out to be the metal coat hangers on a rail by the cabin door, as they banged together they produced a bell-like sound, quiet but sufficient to wake me, which is not easy.

Again we are awakened at 0615 by the breakfast announcement, we had coffee vouchers but no breakfast because at 0715 there was an announcement for all drivers to get to their vehicles. We were off the ferry very quickly, then driving on elevated roadways that made a circuit of the port and passed over the queueing lanes for the outgoing ferry.

Out of the port area we took the motorway type road around Malmo then decided to take the ‘ordinary roads’, that turned out to be a bad idea because there were so many 30 kph speed zones and dreadful speed bumps along the roads. We had expected a pleasant drive along the coast with views of the sea, but what we found was that we were a long way from the coast, and the roads that went to the coast were private with no access. We soon abandoned the idea. Breakfast was had in a small supermarket car park. Weather cold 15°C, heavy drizzle. Got some cash out of a bank machine, then looked around the supermarket. Wow, these prices are about double the same items in Germany, alcohol-free wine available, but none of the real stuff, for that you go to special government shops.

We reverted to the motorway and headed for a forested area, stopped and walked to explore, we found a delightful spot by a lake so decided to stay there for the night. In Sweden you can stop anywhere subject to certain rules, but generally you should be out of sight of any houses and not obviously-private property. I walked back and brought the Hymer, it was further than I remembered. We wandered about the forest and spotted birds, treecreeper, great spotted woodpecker, black kite.

This is an idyllic spot, we are parked parallel to a small lake, quiet and peaceful, everything you might imagine about Sweden. There are wild strawberries which we pick and eat, an intense taste of strawberry, perhaps the original primordial strawberry. I also picked wild raspberries, wonderful taste too. We play games then go to bed. One of the most memorable places we have stayed overnight.
