No driving today. We are up around our normal time 0730, have showers and breakfast, make a packed lunch and look out onto a sunny day. We walk the short distance to the station of Dudelange Usines then take the train into Luxembourg City. Cost is €4 each for an ‘all day’ ticket. The trains were double deckers, something we can’t have in the UK because we have small tunnels.

At the main railway station we picked up a selection of tourist leaflets, including one that showed a self-guided walking tour around the main attractions of Luxembourg City. We decided that was a good way to see this city, so set off. First stop was the cathedral, unfortunately it was closed today, outside was stacked a mass of equipment that indicated that a film crewe were working there today, even though the notices said ‘essential work’ we guessed that there would be fees associated with filming and that would class it as essential work.

Gill navigated us around the city using the maps until we found a small park with fountains around mid day, so we stopped there and ate lunch. Across the road was the Panoramic Elevator of the Pfaffenthal, it is approached via a long tunnel structure that extends horizontally out into mid-air. The sides of the tunnel are glass so you have wonderful views across the city. At the end of the glass tunnel is the elevator itself that takes you down vertically 60m. Lots of people were using the elevator with bicycles, it’s a great asset to the city.

It was very hot, 29 to 32°C showing on different thermometers that we saw, we finished off our walking tour, then caught the train back to Dudelange Usines. My head was aching from sun and heat, we drank a lot of water then sat outside and recovered.

Luxembourg City is not somewhere we would have planned to visit, but turned out to be one of the best city visits we have made. We were really surprised how prosperous a city it was, that just goes to show what a low tax economy can do.

Another good meal then studied possible routes and aires around Strasbourg. A hot night followed.
