Alsace Wine Route by Motorhome

We are up a little later than normal, during the night we heard the trains on the line next to the aire at Dudelange, close to Luxembourg City. We are moving on today, so we service the Hymer, emptying both grey water and toilet cassette then filling up with fresh water. All free of charge here in Luxembourg. It feels like we have been here a long time, but it’s only two nights.

The first thing to do is take advantage of the low fuel prices in Luxembourg, only 0.6km to the nearest filling station. This is fuel sales on an industrial scale, the garage has 29 pumps, and there is a queue at every one of them, except the truck filling pump, which is the one we need on account of the size of our motorhome.

Fuel is is the equivalent of 97p a litre, while it is around £1.32 in the UK (June 2018). What a rip off the tax is in the UK. Here people come from other countries, we look at the registration plates and count the countries. Inside the kiosk the filling station also sells alcohol, wow, what a price difference, Tanqueray gin is half the price of the same bottle in Booths supermarket in Lancaster. People from adjoining countries flock here to shop, so would we! What a difference low tax policies make. Next stop should have been a supermarket to stock up, but there was a 2.9m height barrier, too low for us to enter, so we had to drive on without buying.

We left Luxembourg, passed through Belgium briefly and into Germany. Lunch on a service area then on our way back into France, unfortunately I missed a turning and ended up on the Paeage, horror of horrors, to get off it cost €2, so we have to be more careful in future. We had to make a long detour to get back to where we should have been, then completed the journey to Strasbourg.

There was no suitable aire on the French side of the river, so we opted to go across into Germany, onto the Wohnmobil-Platz am Wasserturm (Motorhome site at the water tower), €8 for 24 hours with good facilities. There is an old water tower close by, which is where the site takes it name from. We sat out in the warm sunshine, drank wine and ate starters planning our day around Strasbourg tomorrow. Staying somewhere near a city and visiting by public transport is a really good option. Train and bus prices in Europe are low and the services are generally good. When we compare the prices to the UK it’s eyewateringly expensive back home.
