Alsace Wine Route by Motorhome

Today we are visiting Strasbourg, leaving the motorhome here on the aire at Kehl, close to the old water tower. We made a packed lunch – yes we could get lunch somewhere, but Gill has a gluten-free diet and despite what the restaurants and eateries claim they do not provide what we consider to be satisfactory gluten-free options. We walked through the town of Kehl, via a colourful street market, just the kind of place we would normally spend a long time browsing around. Today we did not spare time, but pressed on to the metro station, Google maps told us it would take 22 minutes.

The metro was another amazing deal, return tickets for two people cost a total of €3.20, the tickets going onto a card something like an Oyster card for London Transport. The metro took us directly to the main town centre, Homme de Fer. 

We orientated ourselves using the good, free maps from the local tourist information office. Strasbourg is the home of the EU parliament, there is obviously plenty of money about. Very many cafes, also beggars and openly homosexual men walking around in pairs.

We found all the main tourist attractions easily, ate our lunch close to the cathedral which we did not enter because there was a charge.  Similarly there were many museums, all of which charged for entry, we didn’t see anyone paying. If you want to know how much they charge you have to go all the way to the cash desk and ask. We decided that Strasbourg was not our kind of place, the walk-in rate for a typical town-centre hotel room was €500 a night room only, plus €25 each for breakfast. Set meals at the cafes and restaurants started at around €18 and went to around €35 without drinks.

There was a cold wind whistling around, we had seen enough of Strasbourg, so walked back to the metro and returned to the Hymer on the German side of the river where it was much warmer. On our way back thorough Kehl I noted that set meals there started at €7.50, less than half the Strasbourg price.

We sat outside, ate ice cream and researched the Alsace Wine Route, much more interesting than the earlier part of the day.
