Raiskums to Kaunas
Camping in our motorhome at Raiskums campsite in Latvia has been very enjoyable, one of the best campsites that we have stayed at. We delayed the start of our return journey to Lancaster so that we could stay here another night. I know now how small children feel when they are crying because they have to leave to go home after a really good visit. We both want to stay, but there is a pressing need to go home for that event that we said we would attend, a lesson that I have certainly learned and now avoid committing to events that fall in the summer months when we might be away.
We awake to the promise of another baking hot day, we breakfast, shower and service Hymer. We leave about 10.20, instead of sending us northwest on P14, Sat-Nav send us south along a small road (which is direct) but turns out to be 17km of dirt road! What a bone rattler. Each kilometer we think it will turn to a metaled road, but no… dirt road all the way to Straupe where we meet the A3 which takes us via Ragana towards Riga, then the A7/E67 south to Bauska and across the border into Lithuania. Again, not a big event as all the border crossings have gone but still evidence of the old, Soviet border controls and look-outs. We stop for lunch in a layby near a café. It is very hot, about 34°C so have lunch and move on towards Panevežys.
We stay on the E67 almost all the way to Kaunas where we stay for the night. The campsite is just off the A1, a very busy road, but ideal for us as it is en-route through Lithuania. Kaunas is quite a large city, the campsite being next to the Neman river and lake where there is a large sandy beach and lots of lakeside water activities. The campsite is a city-centre campsite (like Bremen in Germany) but very clean and well run. It is mostly full when we arrive but we find a good pitch under the trees and set up.
It is very, very hot and difficult to keep cool, it must be nearly 40°C. We wander down to the beach and are amazed to see hundreds of people sun-bathing, swimming, paddling… families, young couples, very brown old people, in fact everyone! We have smoked ham and vegetables for tea and finish off the last of the Riga strawberries.
It is hard to sleep as it is so hot. We lie under a thin sheet with the windows open but feel the sweat trickle down out skin, but eventually we drop off and fall into a deep sleep.
