Lemme telkimisala campsite – Leetse campsite to Kabli bird centre and Cietais Rieksts
The earth toilets here at Lemme telkimisala campsite have seen better days and are a bit pongy, but we both use them and try not to think about it too much. At least it saves filling our own toilet cassette in the camper.
We leave around 10.30am and drive to Kabli bird reserve and kabli bird ringing station of the coast a couple of miles up the road. There has been a bird migration centre here since 1969 where they net and ring birds during the migration (spring and autumn). We walk down the boardwalk to the reed beds and walk around the shore, watching two white-tailed eagles as we go. It takes us about two hours; it is quite cold today. We have lunch at the Kabli bird ringing station, in the car park, there is nobody else here.
After lunch at Kabli we head south on H67 towards Latvia and Riga. No border crossing into Latvia, the only holdup is roadworks! We continue south on what is now H.1 in Latvia to Saulkrasti, about 40km north of Riga. Now, the day is hot and sunny and we stop at the Elvi supermarket to buy milk and cheese and two ice lollies. Outside is a market stall where we buy potatoes, broad beans (at €2/kg), courgettes, chanterelle mushrooms, strawberries and blackcurrants (which we freeze).
It takes us a while to find the camp site at Saulkrasti, which is the car park at the café: Cietie Riekstie, Saulkrasti. It has good reviews and with good reason. At first glance, it looks like a car park (it is), but the café give us electric hook-up, a good parking space near the access to the beach, all for €7 a night. The location is excellent, the board walk down to the beach (about 100m away) is very convenient.
We park up, and after a foray down to the beach and a paddle in those same roaring Baltic rollers, we take our 2 wine glasses and a bottle of Mosel Riesling to the beach and sit in the sun and drink it. What could be better! Back at the camper we cook the new potatoes and broad beans and eat it with the smoked ham; strawberries, raspberries and ice cream for afters. This is what we like best about travelling in our motorhome.
The evening is warm and very clear, we walk to the beach, take off our shoes and paddle in the sea (yes… even Mr Chard!), it is invigorating and not at all cold. Back at the camper we close up for the night and sleep well.
