Lassay sur Croisne to Ste Pardoux

Lassay sur Croisne to Ste Pardoux

We awake again to a clear blue sky, mist on the lake and a frenzy of feeding swallows over the lake. We are up, breakfasted and away by 9.30am. We take the D20 south from the small village of Lassay sur Croisne and the D20 to Chabris and Vatan. We pass through lovely villages of rural France, where crops are sweet corn and sunflowers and white Charolet cattle.

The villages of Pruniers are especially picturesque and we pass some Aires there and make a note to remember this lovely area of France. Onto D960 which we follow all the way to the town of Issoudun and then the D9 and D65 to Le Chatelet. Here we stop for lunch by the 12th century Eglisé du Puyfferand. We park under the lime trees in front of the church (which is locked) which provides a lovely shady spot in the heat of the day, about 28°C. We walk in the tiny hamlet and stretch our legs.

We swap drivers and back on the D65 to Culan. Here we pass a magnificent chateau in the valley bottom towering over the river and then, up and up and up again over the mountains to Montlucan. We continue south around Montlucan and onto the D2144 through the Valle de Sioule (river Sioule). We stop at a layby for a break and find it looks across the valley towards Chateau Rocher, a magnificent chateau ruin built on a Roche moutonais, a high rocky promonatory. We are tired and find a small Aire to stay the night, about 2km off the D2144 at St Pardoux along a rough and steeply descending track. This small, gravel Aire for four motorhomes is tucked away at the end of lake Cayers.

We are the only ones here when we arrive about 4.30pm, we walk around the lake and across a stony spit onto its very small island and enjoy the quiet. It is full of wildlife: butterflies, dragonflies hovering over the lake and small brown frogs with yellow stripes. We pull out the chairs and table and settle to rest. We read a review of a couple of who stayed here in May and found it unbearably noisy when at dusk about 100,000 frogs came out to mate and sing to them.

Today there are lots of frogs but no singing! Later two more campers arrive, but we don’t really see each other. We have the rest of the spicy lamb for tea and have an early night.
