Camping Las Palmeras to Mora d’Ebro
Camping Las Palmeras to Mora d’Ebro
Glad to leave this beachside campsite, it’s been too hot for us, and crowded in by beach-loving people is not our idea of fun.
We may not like the environment but the facilities of very good, so we make use of them (showers with horizontal as well as vertical water sprays), service Hymer and take A7 from Solimar into Tarragona. We park under the trees in a car park with dedicated motor home spaces, about 10 minutes-walk from the amphitheatre at Tarragona.
As we cross the bridge over the railway lines we have a super view across to the old Roman city which, 2000 years ago was built right on the coast with a gate that led from the Mediterranean into the old Roman city itself. Walking around into the city, this amphitheatre is interesting as an early Christian church has been built (east to west) in the arena itself (probably after the Romans had left). All are ruins but some attempt has been made at restoration of both amphitheatre and church.
We do not pay to go in as it is €7.50 each and we have seen better at Italica and Merida also, there are very good views from the footpaths around the amphitheatre, not least as the city of Tarragona has been built on top of the old Roman city, Circus and fort. We walk into the city to look at the circus, but most of it is now under apartment blocks. We stop at the Plaza Eglesia de Natzaret where there are several eating places and have paella for lunch at El Champanyet. It is very good and we sit under the shade and rest from the hot midday sun (33°C).
After lunch we walk back via the Portal de Sant Antoni and to the car park. From here we take the A7 out of Tarragona to Reus, C44 to Tivissa and C12 to the small town of Móra d’Ebro. Here we find a small Aire (free to park but with no facilities), under the trees next to the mighty Ebro river. There is a coach and driver parked under the trees and Mr C. talks to him in Spanish. He is taking a break this afternoon before his next job at 6.00pm. Sure enough, he leaves just before 6.00pm.
We sit out in the cool of the evening only to find later that we have shared the space with mosquitoes… aggghhhh! Our legs are peppered by mosquito bites that we did not notice last night
