Our first motorhome trip to France Penne d’Agenais to Badefois-sur-Dordogne

We awoke to a perfect blue-sky day with no clouds on the aire de camping cars at Penne d’Agenais. Time to move on and head for the Dordogne, so we packed up and services the Hymer, we are very sorry to leave this camp site as it had been exactly what we needed.

We drive east on the D911 along the Lot valley passing through Fumel and Puy L’Eveque. It is very picturesque, and we are aware we could take the small roads that weave around the bends of the river, but that will need to be another trip. At the D45 we turn north to the D660 stopping at Frayssinet et Gélat for lunch under the trees. It is very hot, about 33°C and mostly no shade. This is an interesting village with information about Hitler’s panzers passing through in 1944 and carrying out terrible atrocities, 10 young men from 10 one-child families were taken hostage and then assassinated in an attempt to stop the family line. There are a number of memorials to the men who were killed that day, a reminder of the devastation and futility of war. The peace and beauty of the village belies the terrible events of 1944.

We carry on driving north and cross the Dordogne at Lalinde where we intended to stay, but the Aire was a town centre car park taken over by commercial caravans of some kind. It is very hot, 34°C, we did another food shop at Inter Marche (with good cool air conditioning) and moved on further along the Dordogne valley to Badefois and find a super Aire in the small village with space for 10 campers. It is next to the river with a large grassy area between the campers and the road, so we set up, open wine and enjoy chicken salad for tea.

Later, six of us in campers had settled quietly and comfortably when two large campers with Italian registrations arrived, make a lot of noise and park up in the middle of all of us. Seven young children, three teenagers and two couples get out, the children go tearing across the grass whooping and yelling as they go… peace shattered as they set up tables on the grass outside ours and two other campers and started their evening meal about 9.30pm. the feral children whining and yelling until goodness knows what time, all the rest of us sit peacefully waiting for them to go in so we can all go to bed in peace. These really are the campers from hell.

Finally, around 10.30pm they take the children in and we all go into our campers. Around 11.00pm we hear the noise of campers leaving… yes, it is the Italians! Total peace descends on the whole area as they depart.
