Our first motorhome tour to France Bénavent to La Rive, Biscarosse

The fourth day since leaving Lancaster and we are setting off from Bénevant heading for Biscarosse, not far from the Spanish border. There are two other motorhomes on the aire at Bénevant when we look out of our windows onto a dull day.

After breakfast I walked to the boulangerie where the woman behind the counter spoke no English so I got chance to speak French. Too often one gets an answer in English, I know my pronunciation is not perfect but it’s not bad. There was no wholemeal bread, I don’t think the French use farine complet at all, in all our travels we have never found it, gluten-free is similar. We also purchased jetons, the tokens that are needed for the water dispenser on the aire, jetons seem hard to buy.

Another day of driving, we didn’t record our travels on this trek, but google maps says it’s 342km avoiding tolls, which is what we always avoid. Our Hymer motorhome is over 3,500 kg so the tolls are extremely high on the French Paeage. It felt like a long day of driving, we swapped drivers regularly, called at a supermarket and stocked up with wine and food then pressed on.

The holiday park is extensive, dozens of static units like very large caravans, plus swimming pools, other leisure facilities and various eating places. The cost of our pitch was €43 a night (2016 price) which gives you all the facilities including the swimming pools, etc. The cost is a lot more than we are used to paying, but it was a commercial holiday park.

We had a very good day with the family, on the beach (freshwater lake), very shallow gradient so you have to walk a long way to get your knees wet. Later we had a barbecue with turkey, sausage  cava and white wine, an very enjoyable evening.
