Albalate del Arzobiso to Camping Rio Vero

Albalate del Arzobiso to Camping Rio Vero

We get up around 8.00am, the car park is half emptied and nothing stirs, not even a dog. We feel like we are sleep deprived… we are! We had decided to stay for the weekend but another night with no sleep does not sound good. We look at the map and decide to head west towards Zaragoza and into the mountains again.

Taking the A224/222 we cross the high mountain plateau of Sierra del Guara to Belchite. It is a dry and dusty land, arid with only olive trees growing here. It reminds us of the Badlands in southern Alberta with deeply grooved white mud canyons for miles and miles. At Belchite we take the A23 towards Zaragoza and A7 to Huesca. Here we take a break, fill with LPG and have lunch (it is late for us and very hot, about 33°C). When Mr C. opens the fridge a box of 6 eggs fall out of a very full fridge onto the carpet and all of them break… what a mess, the sticky whites are better than stiff hair gel and the carpet is hard as a doormat. We clear it up the best we can.

From here, A22 to Lascellas and A1229, and A1223 a very hilly and bendy road into the steep and narrow Vero river gorge at Adahuesca. Finally, after about 280km we arrive at the campsite at Rio Vero. It is bliss… steep terraces of camping pitches, well-used but clean and quiet (just what we need).

Although it is Saturday night it is barely half full and the people here are like us, sitting in the shade of the late afternoon drinking wine and barbequing and chatting in animated groups. We join them, drinking a bottle of the Montsant white Siurana wine and enjoy lomo ham stir fry.
