Ainsa to Riglos

Ainsa to Riglos

Another cool morning but we get up and on our way just after 10.00am. We were shocked by the antisocial and rather disgusting behaviour of cyclists on the grassy area that is the aire. They had no facilities in their vehicle and were too lazy to walk the short distance to the toilets, instead they polluted the grassy area.

From Aĩnsa we take the N260, a good quality and wide road, through Fiscal and all the way to Sabiñánigo. Here we take the E7 [N330] all the way to Huesca (again). The E7 is in the process of a major reconstruction (en obras) through tunnels, over viaducts and widened to dual carriageway. The experience of the roadworks is quite amazing, how the civil engineering project is unfolding in stages. At Huesca we stop again at Alcompo for very cheap diesel (€1.11/L), have lunch and stock the fridge with milk, ham, meat and veg for tea and some local wine. From Huesca we take a smaller, but good road (A132) to Ayerba and turn inwards towards the Sierra de Gállego, following the Gállego river to Riglos los Mallos.

In the distance we could see massive red stone pillars and commented on them, we did not realise that we would be so close to them later that day. These monumental vertical red rocks rise up out of the sierra like giants. The village of Riglos is at their base (literally) and we park on the Parking Autocaravanas beneath their might beauty. There is a bird observation station here as this is the home of the largest colony of griffin vultures and lammergeiers in Europe. We walk to the village and take photos and watch two rock climbers ascend vertically on one the tallest pillars.

Back at the motorhome, we get out the wine and watch with our binoculars as 12 or 15 griffins soar high above us till dusk.
