Ouistreham (Caen) to Villeneuve en Perseigne

Our first night in France, we are parked on the aire at Ouistreham, a stone’s throw from the ferry terminal. We are awakened by the throb of ferry engines and the loud speaker PA system making announcements. The early morning ferry is leaving soon, we sleep till 8.00am, then have a ‘slow morning’, walk down to the beach and enjoy orientating ourselves to the ferry port at Ouistreham (as it was dark last night), the camp site and the town.

There are 40 places and about half of them have left, but soon others arrive, it is a busy site. We empty grey water and get on our way late morning taking the N158 towards Argentan, where we stop for diesel at E.Leclerc and Lidl for cheese (but they have none).

We follow the Route de Falaise (Falaise castle/chateau was the home of William the Conqueror) and then D42 to Sées and D326 to Perseigne and the Forest at Villeneuve de Perseigne. Here, at Aire des Ventes du Four, amongst the trees we park up along with one other camper. The afternoon is sunny with clouds and we enjoy the peace and quiet. The Aire is like a small car park any of the forests in the Lake District, except it is free including drinking water and a grey/chemical disposal point, facilities unheard of in the UK!

Alan walks in the forest (with long trousers tucked into socks because of ticks…), then gets out the watercolours and paints, Gill sits in the sunshine and rests, does some knitting, then sorts the Spaghetti Bolognaise for tea. As we sit in the evening we watch another five campers arrive and park up behind us, there are seven of us in total, in this small Aire-camper-park in the forest. France really is a great country for motorhomes.
