Ensch On The Banks Of The Moselle

It is still hot when we wake here at Ensch ! It is about 26c and the temperature warning is extreme heat, forecast for today is 41c. We can feel it. We decide to stay on the campsite and not do very much. In the morning we sit in the shade between the camper and the thick laurel bushes which make a good barrier from the sun. We read and journal and rest and we are still too hot.

We move inside for lunch and put the fan on, it whirrs around spinning out hot air instead of cool. The temperature is 39°C. I go to the bathroom and touch the cold tap, it is almost too hot to touch and when I turn it on, hot water comes out, hot enough to wash the dishes! I remind myself this is the cold-water tap! The afternoon is still, nothing moves, not a whisp of air. Occasionally a sparrow flits down to join me in the shade, it stops about a foot away, looks at me and pants, beak open.  We both sit motionless; it too feels the heat.

We have the rest of the cooked chicken in a bun for tea and think about our route west across France towards Normandy and cooler weather. The evening does not bring relief from the heat. Although the sun slips behind the trees and we sit in the shade, the air is hot and nothing moves, not a leaf. About 9.00pm, we walk along the river and back between the rows of grapevines, at last there is some coolness to the evening. The temperature is about 32°C.

Despite the heat, we sleep well.
