Our route Dortmund To Frankenberg, Eder

We have a leisurely breakfast, service the camper on the Durrwang facilities, including a wash for the toilet cassette in the automatic cleaner, which cost €1, usually the cost is around €3.

The area around the Dürrwang Hymer dealer is obviously a former coal mining area, there are the old winding stations still visible, they used to be a familiar sight in the UK too. We take H226 towards Dortmund and pick up H1 then H44 towards Kassel and turn south on H445 towards Winterberg. We stop south of Olsberg for lunch and a change of driver and then over the mountains through Winterberg (a popular ski resort) to Frankenberg.

We arrive about 2.30pm and find the campsite by the Sports Centre without any problem. Other members of our dance group are already here, Maureen and Martin and Margaret and Jo. We park up next them leaving a space for Kath and Albert between us. They arrive soon after. We all sit and have a cup of tea in Maureen and Martin’s camper and catch up on our various journeys. We learn that Margaret and Jo had a very bad experience on the ferry from Harwich when the upper car deck was lowered before they had driven off their lower deck, completely removing their satellite dish, air conditioning unit, awning and the skylight window above the door. It sounded very frightening. They are OK, but something from the roof fell onto a passing motor cyclist who has threatening legal action. It all sounds awful. We all agreed not to discuss it at all this week!

Everyone except us goes for an evening meal of winerschnizel at Hotel Bavaria where Robert and Elizabeth, Wendy and Mike are staying on Obermarkt square. We stay at the camper and make stir fry. Later, we walk to Bergburg and up the old stairway (149 steps) to the top of the old town, it is very, very steep! Through Castle Park and past the old castle ruin, burned down by disgruntled towns people in 1376 and never rebuilt. Down the hill, past the tall spire of the Liebfrauenkirche (gothic church) to the town square. We meet the the gang in the Hotel Bavaria and 13 of us sit and chat. Later, we leave and explore the old walled town on top of the hill: the Rathaus (Town Hall) built 1509 and the oldest building, the Steinhaus or Stone House built in 1240, now the library. It is getting cooler, so we wander back, down through the main shopping street, exploring what is there and back to the sports centre camperplaats.
