Home to Rotterdam
We are on the ferry from Hull to Rotterdam, starting our epic trek to Finland, this morning we are awakened VERY rudely by an announcement on the ‘Tannoy’ – showing my age when I talk about that. Has anyone else notice that the name contains the word annoy, which this one certainly did, and there is NO WAY to turn it off. Winston Smith (1984) would have found a way!
We are caught out by the time change too, although it is 0700 here, it’s 0600 in the UK which is what our clocks show. We shower and go for breakfast as quickly as we can, again the food is not great, it doesn’t have to be, because we are a captive market, there is nowhere else for us to go so P & O don’t really have to try hard, they can charge a lot for poor quality, and they do.
We seem to wait ages for the doors to the vehicle deck to open, then we’re off the ferry, a quick check of our passports and we’re out onto the road. Our Hymer is left-hand drive, so it feels quite at home here in Europe. We travel around Rotterdam on the Dutch motorway system, past signs for Rozenberg, the site of a large polypropylene plant that it helped to design in the 1970s, working on the computer control systems. I wonder if the same computers are still there, but doubt it. Our phones guide us using the off-line maps that we set up before leaving home.
En-route we fill up with diesel, which is a lot cheaper than in the UK, so there’s a lesson to remember for next time we are heading to Europe, it’s ok to arrive with an empty tank! We arrive at the campsite by midday, much sooner than we expected. The campsite is a delight here at Camperplaats Skop’nboer, level ground. The pitches are somewhat closer together than in the UK, and radiate from an oval roadway, each pitch has two rows of flagstones so the grass is not damaged. The facilities block is excellent and the free wifi is many times faster than our broadband at home in Lancaster. The payment system is different, an honesty system, you take and envelope, conveniently marked with flags for different languages, fill in your details, put the cash inside and post it into the box provided. Cost for us was €15, very reasonable for such good facilities.
