Camping Montagut to Santa Coloma de Queralt

Back to the road today after two nights on this lovely campsite. Cooler again at about 18°C makes a pleasant morning. We have a slow start, sort out a route towards the wine growing area of Priorat and the mountains above Tarragona.

After an early lunch we leave our restful little haven of Montagut and head towards Olot on A26. From here we takeC37 to Manlleu and C17 to Vic. From here C25 to Manresa where we climb high through the mountains through many tunnels and over high viaducts (just like northern Italy). It brings us to a large town of Igualada in the valley bottom and the A2 to Montmaneu. Here we leave the good quality roads and take a smaller road into rural northern Spain on B221 to St Colomba.

All the towns here are dry, arid scrubland and St Columba is no different. The soft white mud and red sandstone predominate, and we haven’t seen many vines yet! We find the campsite on the edge of the town next to an outdoor sport court and sure enough, about 6.00pm, the local boys (old and young) turn up to kick a ball around. There are two campers here, although several others come to look but don’t stay.

It is fairly basic but a good spot to stopover en-route to the Catalunya, Cava and Priorat wine growing areas of Spain above Tarragona. We park up, open a bottle of French Fitou which is excellent and have spaghetti Bolognaise for tea. In the evening we walk into the town as we can see and hear the church bells. It is a very run-down, arid area but we discover the old town with big open central plaza right in the middle. It is full of people eating and chatting in the cooler dusky evening. We wander through the old narrow streets and are amazed at finding this lovely old town in the middle of a run-down semi-industrialised area.

It is cool when we go to bed, for which we are very glad. The football boys have all gone but four young men play doubles tennis, quite vigorously, until 11.00pm. We understand why as the evening is pleasantly cool.
