Freixo de Numâo to Regua

After the heavy overnight rain here on the aire at Freixo de Numāo, we have breakfast and service Hymer, leaving Freixo du Numão around 10.45, through the neighbouring villages of Touça and Horta onto N222 to São João Pesqueira where we fill with diesel and call at Mini Preço supermarket for a few items, but no fresh milk or fresh meat.

Carrying on the N222 to Ervedosa do Douro we stop above the town for a lunch break, the view is magnificent across the town and the Douro valley with all the terraced vines and olive groves. The black clouds threaten and eventually move over and there are torrential rainstorms again. We leave Ervedosa on N222 and climb up and up over the mountains via Miradouro da Abelheira and down to Bateiras and the Douro River where we turn left (on N222) and drive along side of the river. It is wide and slow moving with terraces of vines and olive groves along its slopes.

We pass a water management system at Eclusa da Barragem (dam) da Régua. The water is very low but we stop to see the sheer power and size of it. Below the Barragem a shallow water area with rocks, where about 50 cormorants, shag and grey heron are basking and fishing.

We arrive at Régua about 4.00pm and park up along side the river. There is plenty of room and about a dozen motor homes have parked there. There is an Area Servicio de Autocaravanas just up the hill, terraced with about 20 level(ish) pitches, €3 including hook-up electricity but we stay by the river. We walk up to Régua station, about a 7-minute walk uphill and check it out, it will be easy to get trains here in either direction.

We go and look for somewhere to eat in Regua. There is nowhere! All places are either closed or only serve drinks. We walk about 30 minutes to the far end of the town and find nowhere, not even the place we set directions to using Google maps, it did not exist! We return to the camper, drink wine with chorizo and crackers overlooking the river. It is humid now that the rain has stopped, later we have jammon salad with potatoes and melon.
