Vanamoisa campsite near Tallin to Haapsalu

We have breakfast and shower at the Vanamõsia campsite. Service the Hymer, emptying grey water and toilet cassette and fill to the top with fresh water.

We drive 93km south from Saue on the E9 to Haapsalu. The roads are good, there are few motor homes here and there are definitely no Brits. No one speaks any English so we are back to a smattering of German, some Anglo-Estonia words and gestures! Mostly it works. When shopping we point to what we want and show large or small quantities, they show us the price on their calculator and we pay with Euros.

At Haapsalu we head for the north-pointing peninsula called Lahe and find the large car park identified on the map. We find it easily and it is perfect for our overnight stops here at Haapsalu. We park at the far end, overlooking reed beds and a small sandy beach. When we arrive, there are lots of families, two young men wind surfing and two other campers. Later a caravan arrives and all the cars leave. It is now hot and sunny, all trace of the rain gone, but a strong wind blowing off the sea. I feel the sea water, it is not cold. There are people swimming, sunbathing and lots of children playing on the small playground.

We go for a walk trying to get to the end of the spit but cannot get through. We meet a local man who stops to talk to us, his lack of English and our lack of Estonian does not seem to bother him at all. He is about 70 yrs old, very bronzed with long silver hair tied back. He talks to us in pigeon-German/Estonian and we establish that his grandmother was born in ‘Halifax near Bradford’, he was born here at Haapsalu and built the houses locally. He flew planes for the Americans in the Vietnam war and was very chatty and friendly.

Later, back at the camper, we get out the chairs and sit in the sun by the beach and drink more wine! Salad with cooked meats for tea and more strawberries!

In Finland drinks with more than 3.5% alcohol are only sold in special government shops, in Estonian shops there is no such prohibition and the amount of space given over to alcoholic drinks shows how much is drunk. Prices are about half what you would pay in the UK. We got a bottle of Russian fizzy wine to sample. It was more like premium cider, especially the taste, not really worth the €4 that we paid for it. Part of the description on the producer’s website says that the Russian fizz it was produced by the heroic efforts of the Russian workers who had reached their target production of so many bottles. We will definitely not be buying more of it.
