Northern Italy and Southern France by Hymer Motorhome

A bright overcast day, cold with powdery snow like we used to get in Canada where it was really cold. All the preparation is done, just the last few things to put into the Hymer and then set off heading from Northern Italy and an international dance festival where we are taking part. I made the breakfast and did 24 for Yang style Tai Chi followed by the 8 Brocades exercises while waiting for the porridge to cook.

So cold that there was a long icicle extending from the Hymer’s gas flue outlet down to the ground. We called and filled up with LPG then onto the M6 heading south. At this time we were still members of the Caravan Club (now Caravan and Motorhome Club) so we used the card to obtain a discount on the M6 toll road. Since then we’ve fallen out with the two big caravan organisations because they are so expensive and don’t offer much for motorhomes, they are big businesses that treat their members are cash cows. We spend most of our time in Europe where they offer almost nothing, even their discounts on travel can be matched if you look around and get cashback.

We made good time to Folkstone, arriving 2 hours before our booked tunnel crossing, it was disappointing not to be offered an earlier train, but that’s how it is sometimes. Had a meal at the Nepalese restaurant in Folkstone, a very good place to call and close to the tunnel terminal.

Finished my book, a very disappointing ending, everyone dead except the woman agent of The Culture ( A Banks si-fi book) 

No warmer in Calais, well what should we expect, it’s only 20 miles away so it’s hardly going to be much warmer. Got ourselves settled into bed with hot water bottles, day one over and an expectation of warmer weather as we drive across France and into Italy.
