2019-07 Frankenberg Eder and France Overview

Frankenburg and France route
28 day motorhome journey starting for home in Lancaster, crossing to Europe via Eurotunnel, across the Netherlands into Germany to attend the Europeade Folk Festival at Frankenberg (Eder). We called in Dortmund to Durrwant, a very large Hymer dealer, where our Hymer had a habitation check, then drove on to Frankenberg-Eder where we stayed several days for the folk festival. We are part of a group that dances English Folk Dances and were taking part in the festival. It was a busy time, very enjoyable but hard work at times.
After the folk festival we visited friends in Alsfeld, Germany. Next stop Ensch where we have stayed before, a delightful stellplatz on the banks of the river. This was a memorable stay, because the temperature was so high, around 39°C, we are not accustomed to such temperatures and found it difficult. We drive across Germany, pass briefly through Luxembourg then into France heading west towards Normandie where we make a tour of sights and locations associated with William the Conqueror. Last area we visited was Brittany, where we meet up with our youngest son and his family who are taking a holiday in a county house in the small village of Rosquelfen.
Finally we head back to Caen and catch a ferry back to the UK. We drive north from Portsmouth but are overcome by tiredness and spend an uncomfortable night in a lay-by with heavy rain falling and trucks thundering past. Not the best night, but we survived it.
A very long trip that was memorable. The links in the table below go to detailed information about each day. For me, this is what owning a motorhome is all about, the freedom to travel where you want when you want with nobody interfering with your plans. The rural roads of France, the German Autobahns, other countries, other cultures, different customs, sighs and sounds. The opportunity to speak another language and shop in different shops and supermarkets. Experiences that the package-tour tourist will never have the opportunity to experience; and, they will never know exist. Seeing different ways of doing things. Long may it remain so!
Motorhome statistics and costs for this trip
This trek across Europe divides neatly into two parts, the first being our visit and participation in the Europeade 2019 Folk Festival held at Frankenberg-Eder in Germany, followed by travel around Normandie and Brittany visiting the historic sites associated with William the Conqueror.
Our overnight costs (aires etc) are given in this table, France is wonderful country in which to travel by motorhomes, we wonder if the UK will ever catch up.
