Cham to Weinsberg
Motorhome journey Weinsberg to Mittelbergheim
A very wet and rainy day here at Weinsberg. First item on the agenda is bread, Mr C walks through the subway under the railway track and finds the bakerei only a short walk away. Before going to buy bread Mr C armed himself with the appropriate words, mentally repeating them, although you are never sure what response you will get when you ask for something. On this occasion the thing that was unexpected was the young woman’s question, after he had chosen a large loaf of ‘farmer’s bread’ (Bauernbrot). The answer was ‘yes please’ — the questions — do you want it sliced? (geschnitten) another useful word learned.
After that we get on our way about 9.30. Through Weinsberg town and back on H.6, G driving first today. All the way past Sinsheim to Walldorf where we turn south onto H.5, another fast dual carriageway to Karlsruhe. Here we find the large XXX-Luft Shopping Centre and park up. Into Kaufland to stock the fridge: milk, bread, cheese, some German cooked meats, enough to keep us going for the week.
The shopping experience was different, Germany has a great many relatively small supermarkets and relatively few hypermarkets, this was one of the latter. Then Lunch and on our way again about 2.30pm back onto H.5 to Offenberg with Mr C. driving. We cross the Rhine from Germany into France via the huge, wide bridge and onto L98 on the French side to A.35 and south to Mittelbergheim.
We arrive in Mittelbergheim about 5.00 pm and park on Zotzenberg Parking next to the cemetery. It is still raining and we are the only motorhome here. We park up facing the view over the town and the vines, although it is limited by low cloud and mist. We walk down to the winery of Mr Schwob first who has a French couple in but he welcomes us like old friends and we ask for Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc and 2022 Riesling which is delicious.
We buy litre bottles as they are such good value. Next a couple of doors down to Domaine Wittman, locating Madam who served us last time. Here we taste Cremant d’Alsace – white & pink and Pinot Noir and buy some of all three. By this time it is about 7.00 pm. Tea of Salmon rillette and thinly sliced baguette, chicken paella and yogurt. About 9.30, suddenly and without warning I begin to feel ill, very ill and spend the night vomiting every hour from 10.00 pm through to 6.00 am when I fall into a deep sleep. Mr C. seems fine thank goodness.
