Alsace Wine Tasting Trek

Our first European trek in the Hymer motorhome since lockdown, two years since our escape from Covid, so it was with some trepidation that we embarked on this trip. This trek was a total of 1,600 miles which took just over 48 hours to drive, average speed 33 miles per hour and fuel consumption 32.7 miles per gallon.

Since Brexit many aspects of travel have changed, no longer can we UK citizens wander freely around Europe for as long as we want but we’re going to continue our european travels.

It’s the small inconveniences that we notice most, like needing a UK sticker on the back of the Hymer, huge Angles Morts stickers too and getting our passports stamped, worst of all not being able to bring back as much wine as we wanted. Brexit has not delivered.

Here’s our route from home, through the tunnel, across Belgium, Luxembourg, France and Germany. Travel through Europe is very easy once you are on the mainland, you hardly notice which country you are in. One this motorhome journey the weather was extremely hot, that caused us to change our plans and stay longer at places than we normally stay.  Our usual travel plan is to move short distances and stay on aires whenever possible. The high temperatures, often in the 30s made travel more difficult, especially because the temperature inside the Hymer is often 6 to 10 degrees more than outside, so we were presented with temperatures approaching 40°C. We reduced the stress by moving to the mountains and staying on a campsite with plenty of trees for shade.
