At Cónchar – a day out in Granada
A better night, drifting in through the window is the sound of goat bells and braying of the goats, the sun streams in, tiny beams stream in through the ventilation gaps in the blind which we leave open at night.
After breakfast, we spend most of the morning chatting and catching up and plan an afternoon in Granada accompanied by our own personal opera singer again for about two hours! It is not unpleasant and adds to the ambiance of being in the mountains.
We lunch on jamon Iberico and bread from the baker who called at the door. About 3.00pm (it is still a little hot for going out) Julian drives us to Granada and we park on Realias San Matias car park and walk first to collect the Alhambra tickets from the Corral del Carbón (Ticketmaster office) on Calle Mariana Pineda. We cross the road to the Plaza Isabel de Catolica and comment on the intricate and ornate nature of the many churches, they are everywhere! We walk along to the Cathedral of Granada and Julian and Geneva decide to pay €5 each and go inside.
Alan and I wander around the outside of the cathedral and take photographs of it and the university buildings close by. We walk along Plaza Nueva, past the courts of Justice (very grand buildings) to Carrera del Darro (by the Rio Darro. Here we have a super view upwards to the fortress wall of the Alhambra as we are walking below the perimeter fortification. We meet Julian and Geneva at 5.30 and climb up and up to Albaicin (the old Moorish quarter of Granada). It is steep and hot work, working our way via: Calle Baňuelo, Calle San Juan de Los Reyes, we climb steps to Calle Guinea, climb again up Cuesta de las Tomasas, more steps at Cuesta Cabras and finally onto the Plaza San Nicolás. Here the mirador opens up a spectacular view of the Alhambra on the hillside directly opposite.
The plaza is full of tourists milling around and taking photographs, flamenco guitarists are playing for tourists, making a truly Spanish experience. We are hungry, it is almost 7.00pm. I look in a restaurant off the Plaza San Nicolás, it is one long terrace overlooking La Alhambra. I ask a woman coming out what it is like and she pulls a face and says Expensive… €20 for a view! We hesitate but decide to go in anyway and are so pleased we do. I get ice cold wine, Mr C. beer and Julian and Geneva hot mint tea with cookies. The view and ambiance is perfect and we admire the range glow of the setting sun directly onto the Alhambra. Our food when it comes is just as good: I have grilled salmon, Mr C has chicken with almonds, Julian a salad and Geneva tagliatelle. We share a large plate of potatoes bravos.
As we eat the sun sets and the Alhambra floodlights come on, it is breath-taking, as evidenced by the people taking photographs, selfies and just sitting in awe of the view. Alas the evening gets late and we need to move. We have a long walk down and down and down Camino Nuevo San Nicolás, a wide cobbled walkway, to Calle Zenete, Calle Elvira and finally to Calle Gran via de Colon and back to the car park. It is 10.30 when we arrive back at Conchar, all very tired but having had a good day
