Google Timeline Problems

Google has moved storage of Timeline data onto individual devices, that means all your Timeline data for your phone is stored only on your phone and is no longer accessible via a browser. This is causing me a massive problem, let me explain.

All the maps on this website show our travels as they were recorded using my iPhone and google maps Timeline. In the past I was able to view the Timeline and then download the route for each day as a KML (Keyhole Markup Language) file, then make a composite file for a whole journey showing the overnight stops etc.

BUT, that facility is now gone, all the data is on my iPhone and the only way to access it is via the Google Takeout facility that downloads the whole of my Timeline data from day one, which is huge AND it is stored in JSON (Javascript object Notation) form. I have searched repeatedly for tools to convert this data into a more friendly format without success.

This situation leaves me without a relatively quick way to draw maps of our travels. I’m still looking and hope to find a way to add daily travel routes. Watch this space for updates.

Google’s Timeline also has a problem that shows a straight line from the end of a journey back to the start, nobody seems to be fixing these problems.
