Turku to Tallinn

Europeade 2017 is over, 6,000 participants are ready to make their way home, we’re two of them, our journey from Turku in Finland will begin today, ending in Lancaster, UK taking us through the Baltic States, starting with Estonia.

We went for our final breakfast of the Europeade folk festival in the school canteen meeting other members of our group, there were very few people there, most had already left for home. Back at the Hymer we packed away our dance costumes because we will not need them again on this trip. We filled up with diesel before leaving Turku, then headed along the motorway towards Helsinki. We found Helsinki a dreadful place for motorhomes, there is nowhere to stop and park. Our intention was to explore the city but we abandoned that idea and went directly to the Viking Line Ferry checkin at the docks. Smooth checkin process. Sat and waited.

One the ship got underway progress was good, I checked the speed with the GPS on my phone and found we were travelling at 25.5 mph, good for a large vehicle ferry. Arrived in Tallin 1830, off the ferry quickly and used google maps to go to a garage selling LPG. There was a notice on the pump saying there was a problem so the pump was closed, not what we wanted to hear.

Driving in Tallinn is crazy, fast, aggressive,  a lot of horn blowing, narrow lanes, strange traffic lights, a complete shock to the system. We headed for our campsite at Vanamõisa and I asked Gill to look out for a supermarket as we went. Soon we did find a supermarket, a massive place like an aircraft hangar, but full of the most ancient shelves we have ever seen. In the lobby area there were stalls selling local produce, that seemed odd to us. When we looked at the produce we were shocked, it was all of very poor quality, it would never have reached the supermarkets in the UK, and the prices were out of this world. A small cucumber that we would pay 50p for was priced at €1.63, mis-shaped carrots €4.50 a kilo, we normally pay around 79p a kilo for perfect carrots! Grapefruit around £1.50 each. By chance there was garage with LPG on the same site, so we were able to fill with LPG at €0.56 per litre, very cheap, so we’re happy now, we have full tanks.

No problems finding our campsite at Vanamõisa,  young woman checked us in easily using very good English. You find your own pitch, all of which were block paved with electric hook-up. Wine and food followed in that order. A stressful day with a complete change of culture and scenery.
