Arriving at Turku, Finland via Viking Lines ferry from Stockholm
We awake in our cabin on the Viking Lines ferry arriving in Turku, Finland. We are both a little worse for wear, wine on tap that you help yourself to is not good for us, neither is buffet food. We were both post-war children from a time when you ate what was in front of you and finished it. I remember queueing up with my mother with ration books when I was a child, and the constant reminders to eat.
We were last on the ship, but we’re first off, our destination here in Turku is the Gaterade conference centre, it’s also an ice hockey rink. We arrive easily enough, it’s not far and meet up with the couple who organise our folk dance activities, Martin and Maureen, 8am, so we have breakfast in our respective campers and wait for the rest of our party, the Welsh contingent, to arrive. At 1030 we go to register for the 2017 Europeade Folk Festival, each of us receives a bag containing our wrist bands and various other bits and pieces. The wrist band is the most important item because it gives us free travel on all the buses in and around Turku, and access to venues and meals.
Our English-speaking guide Pia takes us to the school where the motorhomes are to be parked, Turn Lyseo school, there is electric hook-up, but it turns out to be plug-in parking power that is only switched on for a couple of hours a day, not much use really. Pia takes us to another school and shows us how to navigate the buses, the journey from our school to the school where our evening meals are served takes between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the traffic and involves a change of bus. There are 6,000 participants in Europeade in Turku, it’s a big festival of folk music and dance with groups from all over Europe taking part. Performances are arranged at many stages that have been set up around the city.
We settle in, breakfast will be at the school where campers and motorhomes are staying, part of our group arrive by air, they are staying in the school along with hundreds of young people (see photos), we get packed lunches each day and evening meals at a different school. We’re here for 5 nights and have many performances to give, it’s going to be a busy time. We talk, relax and find out how the others travelled here.
