Viking Squares Square Dance Campout, Colsterworth
Back to trip summary page || Next day
Usually our European adventures begin with the dreadful journey south on the M6, well-known for the congestion, road works and collisions that produce miles and miles of queues, this adventure began slightly differently because we broke our journey about half-way at Colsterworth.
Our main hobby is dancing, both English Folk Dance and American Square Dance, check out our English dance group here, where you will find videos and details of recent performances. American Square Dance is a little different because there are different levels, from Social Square Dance through to Challenge that has many levels. There are a variety of events in the UK and other countries, more information here.
The Viking Squares Campout is an annual gathering that takes place at Colsterworth Village Hall and Sports and Social Club. The two buildings are next to each other on the same site. The village hall is a large hall with stage and kitchen so it’s very suitable. About 60 people camp on the playing fields in a variety of tents, caravans and motorhomes. Overall it’s a really good event that starts on a Friday evening. There is a party atmosphere, this year there was a flypast of a Hurricane and Lancaster, very impressive they were.
We stayed over on the Sunday and left monday to travel to Folkstone for our crossing to Calais via Le Shuttle – the renamed Channel Tunnel Company.
As usual we stayed on the aire de camping cars at Le Grand Gravlot, where the price is now €11. On this occasion there were about 40 motorhomes staying.
There break at Colsterworth was ideal as it meant that we did not have to travel 325 miles from Lancaster to Folkstone in one day. Our favourite Nepalese restaurant in Folkstone was closed when we arrived, so we purchased an Indian takeaway, which was very good and far more food than we could eat at one sitting.
