Snow Chains on Hymer B544 motorhome
We are setting off on a long motorhome journey across France through the Alps into Italy. France has regulations requiring us to carry snow chains, so we’ve purchased them, and are trying out the fitting procedure in good conditions before going.

Before setting off on such a long motorhome trip across France in March and April we checked road and legal requirements. Travelling in France at this time of year means you have to carry snow chains. Snow chains are not something that most English people have in their motorhome or car, the first job was to compare different types and research what other people had said about their snow chains and experiences travelling in snow conditions through France and Italy. An interesting exercise. After a lot of searching a decision was made and snow chains purchased rather than snow shoes or other types.
These snow chains are heavy, we purchased a set of two chains for the front drive wheels of our Hymer motorhome. Then set about testing them by fitting them whilst in good conditions on the driveway at home. Finding out how to fit snow chains is not something you really want to do when you are in sub-zero temperatures half-way up a mountain or somewhere like that. It turned out that it’s not too difficult, but that was working here at home under almost ideal conditions. Fitting snow chains when they are needed would be a completely different thing.

As it turned out we didn’t need the chains, but there is a legal requirement to carry them at certain times in France. The snow chains are now sat in our shed in their plastic box waiting for the next time we venture into snowy conditions. As our preference is for warmer weather so we might sell them.
