Motorhome Journey from Ansbach to Cham
A lovely sunny day dawns, breakfast and then we plan our route for the final leg of our 1000 km journey from Calais to Cham. We leave on H6, a good road but a single lane highway, around Schwabach to Amburg, turning south onto H85 at J67. This is a good dual carriageway, making much easier driving. We stop on the Rastplatz near Pfennigweg for a lunch stop and change drivers. After a good rest, back on the road with G driving, past Schwandorf and Roding. Here the landscape changes to a typical Bavarian vista, wood chalets with curved roofs (for the snow) with balconies decorated with rows of troughs full of flowers. Missing the first turning from H85, we take H20 to the east side of Cham, turning into the town near the Kanu-Club (clearly seen from the high level bridge as you enter the town.
We park on the large carpark next to the canoe club, fill with water (we are now down to 25%) and pack two large bags with our clothes and other needs ready for our stay in the hotel. About 4.30 pm we drive into Cham and park on the small parking area outside Hotel Randsbergerhof. Going into the hotel we check-in and find our room (511 on fifth floor) and drop our two heavy bags in there. Back to Hymer we bring the other two small bags (computers, devices, shoes and G’s square dance outfits (somewhat bulky) and take them to the room. We unpack and sort our bags putting things away.
Next, we drive back to the Kanu-Club and park up in the gated compound for the week, Mr C. paying the €9/night. It is hot and sunny, 18°C with the occupants of the 8 motorhomes/caravans sitting by the river and relaxing. A group of about 6 or 7 young people have been swimming in the river and canoe storage barn is unlocked for those who are going out to paddle. We walk the one km back to the hotel, taking about 15 minutes, we arrive just after 6.00pm. Dinner is served from 6.00pm so we go down to the old baronial hall about 6.30 and help ourselves to tuna and salad started, grilled fish and fried potatoes for G. and wiener schnitzel, potatoes and vegetables for Mr C. who also has apple strudel (which he says is excellent, very light and full of apple).
Trevor and Chris (from Lancaster) come to join us and we enjoy a good hour of chatting, catching up on events. Later we join the Trail-In dance in the hotel but do not stay long as we are very tired.
