2025 September: Santander Ferry to UK and Myrtle Farm Campsite

Aboard the MV Pont Aven I wake at 07.07am remembering this is English time (08.07 Spanish time). I have slept for over ten hours without waking (unheard of me). No storms in the night, no pelting rain like stones on a tin can, no violent rocking or movement… perhaps it wasn’t stormy across the Bay of Biscay after all.

We shower, it is good and hot and then go for breakfast. There is already a queue, but we get in line and don’t have to wait long for bacon, eggs and sausage. The breakfast is acceptable, but nether quality or quantity really justify the price. After coffee and breakfast we feel ready for the day. The sky is blue, the sun is shining on the Atlantic coast of France, and Biscay is as smooth as a mill pond. Not a storm or black cloud in sight. The day passes easily as we find a quiet corner to sit and read or journal. A snack lunch of salad and the afternoon passes in similar vein. We arrive at Plymouth an hour late (16.00 instead of 15.00), they tell us it is the storms around the UK but we know it is their ineptitude at Santander.

We are first off the ferry (the benefits of being last on…), follow the line of traffic through Plymouth, always a dismal trail through a town that is unsuited to ferry traffic that it endures rather than embraces, onto A38 all the way to Exeter. Here we move seamlessly onto M5 towards Bristol, late afternoon it is busy but the traffic is flowing quite well. We are heading for a campsite at Myrtle Farm Camping near Weston Super Mare, taking Junction 21, we follow Wolvershill Road, through a new estate and find Myrtle Farm on the outskirts of the town. There are two large, level grassy fields and we drive onto the first where we see other mohos. As we park up on an available pitch, the lady who runs the site comes to chat to us. We pay our £20 for the night, which by English standards is a very reasonable cost as there is a very good (and clean) toilet and shower block and kitchen with fridge and washing machine. It is a very nice site. It is early evening (almost 7.00pm) and sun is sinking fast we open a bottle of Cava and watch the sunset behind a silhouetted tree. Tired after a long day we eat only baguette with rillette and ham and have an early night.
