Sightseeing in León

Here in León the temperature is much lower, it feels cold, not surprising really because we are at 830 metres, equivalent to the top of St Sunday Crag or High Street in the UK’s Lake District. The aire is full, which is not surprising. We are now in holiday mode, so we take our time getting up and having breakfast and are finished by 9:30am. 

Sightseeing around León starts with a visit to the Roman Museum, free entry, we spent a long time exploring the different floors and walking along the top of the Roman wall. I thought the reconstruction of a barrack room was very effective and gave a real sense of what would have been there. We wandered around the city, looked at Casa Botines, a building designed by Gaudí, although it was a beautiful building it seemed out of context, but so are Gaudí’s other buildings in Barcelona, so perhaps that should not cause comment.

About lunchtime we had a message from our youngest son to say that the queen had died, we were both very sad to hear that news. Neither of us has ever known a different monarch and I remember watching the 1953 coronation of the television. The house was full of friends and neighbours that day. Being a small boy at the time it didn’t mean that much to me, I still have the mug that we all received at school.

Later in the day we walked to the museum of contemporary art, but it was closed. We carried on along the road and found a park that was full of people of all ages including whole families. They were all enjoying being out in the warm sunshine, on the playground, playing football or just sitting and talking.

We walked back to the aire and played card games until bedtime.
