Bilbao to Burgos
I wake on the ferry between Portsmouth and Bilbao about 7.00am feeling better than I ought.
We get up and shower, the sway of the ocean still making it necessary to hold onto the bar in the shower to prevent slipping. I watch the water in the shower rush from one side of the tray to other and know that there is still a good swell on the sea. We breakfast in the cafeteria on Deck 10 (the top deck), the sun comes out from behind the clouds and the swell begins to settle. We watch the sway of the ferry measured on the spirit level fall from ±4 to ±1 and know that finally, as we approach Bilbao the storm has passed.
The Cap Finistere ferry makes good progress, I use the GPS on my phone to check the speed, 29 mph, that’s fast for a ship of this size. Cap Finistere continues, leaving the Bay of Biscay behind, and docks at 11.45am (due 12.45 local time). It is noticeably warmer when we dock and we take the E-70 towards Bilbao and then Balmeseda. From here, the BI-636 and then CL-629 south through the Cantabrian mountains towards Burgos. We travel alongside the Ebro river and through the Ebro gorge which is spectacular with high rocky peaks towering on each side.
We stop where the CL-629 crosses the Ebro and watch about a dozen griffon vultures gliding effortlessly over the gorge. Their wingspan is up to 285cms, they are enormous birds and yet they fly effortlessly in the sky. We continue on through Valdenoca and fill up with diesel at a small filling station in Cernégula, amazing, here we are miles from anywhere and paying less than €1 a litre for diesel, then to Burgos, where we head for the aire. We arrive just in time to park on the last available space, 30 motorhomes here now.
We venture across to Al Campo, a massive supermarket in a shopping mall. It’s on a par with Sainsbury’s in the UK, higher price than the others like Mercadonna and Super U. We stock up, Serrano ham, sausage, cheeses, wine, all the delicacies that we like, then back to the Hymer. We are still feeling the motion of the car ferry when we go to bed.
