Mid-April 2025, a Monday morning and we’re full of anticipation when we wake, we have a crossing to France booked on Le Shuttle, so there are 325 miles to drive today. Our aim is to be at Oye Plage, a bird reserve close to Calais tonight. The first part of our trek is to the Bavarian town of Cham, close to the border with Czechia. We are booked onto Cham College, an annual event for American Square Dancer enthusiasts and Round Dancers. There will be hundreds of people at the event.

We have allowed ourselves a week to drive to Cham, that’s more than enough time, but we don’t want to have to sit and drive all day every day. In reality we arrive at the Kanu Club (Canoe Club) in Cham much earlier than we needed, mainly because the event organisers did not send the programme until after we had left home. We could have arrived 3 days later – we will keep that in mind if we go next year.
