2025 September: Capmany to Siurana

As we drink coffee we see the large French moho leaving at 7.30am, an early start for them, we also notice a small VW campervan that must have arrived late last night as a young couple are out and about. As we breakfast Oñe calls to ask if everything is OK, he is going to Figueres and do we want to stay another night, we say No, we will move on and pay him €15 (€2/person plus donation). I wander around taking some photos, it is very weedy with tall plants off the parking pitches especially with spikey plants and bamboo so I try and avoid these.

We leave about 10.00am, back through the village of Capmany to Figueres where we park on the pay car park of Hotel President (they have two larger spaces for motorhomes) with parking charged by the minute… very useful. We walk the 5-7 minute distance to the Salvador Dali Theatre and Museum, conspicuous by its red paint, yellow splats in a grid over the red walls and a row of golden eggs around the roof perimeter (very Dali). It is already busy, but we buy tickets at €17 each (concessions) with an entry time of 11.45am. Not long to wait and we enter with the others.

The museum was an old Theatre (hence the name) which Dali purchased and visualised as the location for his ‘modern art installation’. He oversaw the conversion of the interior and displaying of his work in a number of rooms arranged in a circular manner around the central atrium (with glass dome roof). We wander from room to room, amazed by his skill and ability to capture details of friends and family in portraits as well as his ‘off the wall’ surreal art and fantastical visuals of everyday objects. Two hours fly by, which is how long it takes us to walk from room to room and exhibit to exhibit.

It is 2.30 when we leave, back at Hymer we have a quick lunch and move on (paying €7.80 for almost three hours) when another moho arrives wanting the space! With some difficulty we find a garage selling GPL (Autogas) and fill up (25 litres), then drive to Siurana (in the rioja wine growing region) last visited in 2018. We park on grass among the olive trees of the Societat Agricola, an olive oil producer, with a huge level area for about 30 or more mohos. We stop on pitch 4 (of the 8 extra wide pitches on our side of the buildings) facing the Pyrenees mountains in front and Roses Bay and the Mediterranean on our right. It is level, has showers/toilets, water and emptying facilities for €25/night. The toilets and showers are the best that we experienced during this trek through France and Spain. There is lots of space (and lots of flies) but it is a nice to stop.

We explore, then catch up with family and emails, the WiFi is fast and included in the price. Later we open wine and sit inside (because of the flies) but enjoy the view just as well and have the last of the Jambon for tea (from Auchan at Calais) with salad. We are both exhausted, but then we have driven about 1200 miles in 11 days, so it is time for a rest!

Siurana Day 2

Today is also going to be our day of rest! We shower in the spotlessly clean showers and watch as seven of our ten neighbours leave. I notice a mottled red area on my lower left leg, it is quite marked and warm to touch, it looks like I have caught the sun but as I wore long trousers yesterday it cannot be that. We wander around the site and explore, in the afternoon I write my journal and Mr C. paints a watercolour of the olive trees. The day seems to drift by quite quickly. The temperature falls to the low twenties (it feels like England and not Spain) and we watch as the heavy grey clouds drift southwards from France over the Pyrenees, rain is forecast later. We enjoy a very good bottle of crèmant then cook chicken and mushroom stir-fry for tea and have an early night.
