Roding Germany to Tlumaċov Czechia
Motorhome Journey Roding DE to Tlumaċov CZ
Our first day without dancing and the day we cross into Czechia! While still in Germany, we drive ten minutes up the road to ALDI and do a large shop, filling the fridge with salad, vegetables, fruit, local meats and delicacies, together with staples like milk, bread and potatoes. It costs €68 and almost as much shopping as we would pay £100 for at home!
Leaving Roding we head east towards the German border and Czechia, but as we have to pass through Cham, we call at the Canoe Club, have lunch, fill with water, empty the tanks and use the toilet/shower facilities. Back on A85 we arrive at the border at about 1.30pm and find the MOL garage at Folmava where we can collect the road toll box necessary for any vehicle over 3.5 tons (us). The very nice Czechan young man speaks no English (which we are to find mostly throughout Czechia) but does speak halting German, fortunately Mr C has been learning German in preparation for this trip, so between the two of them their halting German is good enough! The road toll box collected and suckered to the windscreen, we fill with Diesel and LPG (both tanks almost empty) and continue on our way, same road but now R26 from Folmava, then R193 to Domazliče.
We turn south but find we are directed by Google Maps to a dirt road (no thanks, not for an indeterminate number of km) and find another route. Here we take R1903 to the small town of Tlumačov. Here we find a small right turn up and up to the alpine meadow where we find our parking spot for the night, Vyhlidková vĕž Tlumačov (or the observation deck at Tlumačov). It is a large flat grassy area with a view over the valley towards the next village below the bird-viewing tower and… there is no one else here… bliss. We choose a spot for the night and… stop! It is about 4.00pm and we agree, a good day’s work: a big Aldi shop, filling/emptying Hymer, filling with diesel and LPG, crossing the border from Germany to Czechia and making money transactions in the local Kč (crowns we think).
This quiet and totally deserted mountain hide-away is just what we need: a flat grassy area tucked away at the end of an old quarry, surrounded by bushes full of birds, a fabulous view over the valley where we see red kites circling lazily above the trees surrounded by fields of bright yellow canola (oil seed rape). We sit out in the sun about 22°C (warm but not too warm up in the mountains) open light and bubbly Crémant and totally relax. Later I cook stirfry with our new stash of vegetables and the last of the fillet mignon (from Auchan in France). This is definitely the life. In the evening we walk up to the viewing tower, the fragrant canola is over-powering, so delicate yet so strong. As the sun is setting a mule deer leaps carelessly through the canola and out of sight down the hill. The view and the sunset are stunning, we appreciate and enjoy the quiet, the view and the pleasure of just being here.
