Motorhome Journey France Esquelbecq to Givet

We are up and breakfast reasonably early here at the aire de camping cars, Esquelbecq. We service Hymer but find that the water column is out of order (no water). From Esquelbeqc we take A25 to Lille, A27 past Tournai in Belgium, E42 to Mons and N40 south to Merbes le Chateau, a lovely spot overlooking the River Sambra (and a good future overnight stop. Here we have lunch enjoying a good break.

Later taking N561 through Belgium (which has totally rubbish roads… full of potholes and worse than anything in England), back onto N40 to Phillippville and Givet in France (our destination). We cross the bridge to the Aire de camping cars at Givet overlooking the river and find a spot about half way along with a good river view. There are about 14 or 15 motorhomes (on the 22 spaces) where we park up overlooking the river. We walk to the Carrefour corner shop, to stretch our legs as much as anything (144 miles today) and buy a box of ice cream lollies.

Back at Hymer we eat a lolly and enjoy the view of the river. Later we cook stirfry chicken for tea with local white asparagus, which is delicious. In the evening there is a fabulous sunset, the river is coloured a burnished orange and gold with the black silhouettes of trees and buildings. By the minute it gets better until finally the sky darkens to night.
