2024 September: France and Spain – Overnight at Oye Plage

Previous day  || Back to trip summary page || Next day

Our first night in France, spent on the free aire at Oye Plage, adjacent to the bird reserve.

You may wonder why we choose to stay here at Oye Plage; go back a couple of years and we always stayed on the aire de camping cars at Gravelot, cost around €11 for the night, a very short drive from the Le Shuttle terminal so it was an ideal place, so convenient and a reasonable price. Imagine our surprise when we arrived around 9pm and found the site inaccessible, cones across the road and all the facilities closed, entry terminal gone. We got out the mobile phone and searched for nearby aires and found Oye Plage about 15 minutes drive away.

A bit of research showed that the aire at Gravelot had been acquired as part of the CampinCar-Park network, since then it’s been incorporated into their network of aires, and of course the price has been ‘adjusted accordingly’, when we last looked it was €17.20, not a fortune, but we actually like Oye Plage because we can use the toilets and visit the birdwatching hides. Try finding an overnight in the UK for £15 and you’ll soon see. Our webpage showing the original site and details is here.
