Alsace Wine Route by Motorhome

We are going to have to be more selective about wine purchases, our large side locker of the Hymer is filling up with cases of wine. We began with a lazy, slow breakfast but had to hurry our departure when we discovered that there was a market today at Dambach-la-Ville a short distance away, and it finishes at 1230. We arrived but had difficulty parking, so Gill got out and went to the market, I found a place to leave the Hymer and joined her.

We purchased cheese and vegetables from the market at Dambach-la-Ville, Gill using gestures to communicate what was needed before I arrived. The town of Dambach-la-Ville is picturesque indeed, with an old water supply in the square and interesting buildings. After wandering around we moved on, stopping for lunch on the way, where a small bus with a group of 16 English people were also taking lunch.

Called at Grand Frais supermarket and Lidl for various supplies, filled up with more diesel and pressed on along the Alsace Wine Route. We ended up at Domaine Fritz, a wine producer which provides motorhome pitches between some of their vines close to the town. At Domaine Fritz there is also a wine tasting in the early evening to which all the occupants of the motorhomes are invited.

This was an interesting tasting, there were 7 people, 2 French, 2 Australian, 1 Belgian and us 2 from the UK. The tasting was conducted mostly in French, with no concessions to speakers of other languages. My French is good, but not really good enough to understand the nuances of wine tasting and the amount of detail that was presented very quickly. To give an idea of speed, we tasted 7 wines, all made purchases and were out of the building with our wine in less than 30 minutes. We didn’t think that wine tasting at Domain Fritz was a good experience, it felt rushed and more of a selling exercise.
